Scholarships
John Thumel Memorial Scholarship
The John Thumel Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to an active Sigma Chi who exemplifies the character traits most important to John Thumel: Family, Friends and Faith. The scholarship was established in honor of John Thumel, who would have graduated with the class of 2016. John was tragically killed on July 26, 2015 at the age of 23 due to injuries sustained in a car accident in Galveston, Texas. At the time, John was working for Dow Chemical and participating in the McCormick School of Engineering’s co-op program. The scholarship was established with the Sigma Chi Foundation with strong support by John’s family, friends, Sigma Chi brothers, and the NU Community.
Omega Leadership Scholarship
Recognizing one sophomore and junior who, in addition to demonstrating exceptional ability in the classroom, must demonstrate a commitment to the chapter and the greater community.
Omega Brothers Scholarship
Instituted during the 2010-2011 school year, this scholarship was created as a scholarship opportunity for chapter members with financial need with the intent of helping recipients cover the costs of fraternity dues and books for their courses. While a member’s financial situation is pertinent to selecting the final candidates and recipients of this need-based scholarship, the scholarship also focuses on other qualities relevant to a person’s candidacy for any other scholarship, including, but not limited to, academic standing, campus leadership, and fraternity involvement.
Prospective Brother Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded during the Winter Quarter instead of the Fall Quarter of each school year to prospective brothers (pledges) who have shown exceptional dedication to leadership during pre-college and college years, and who demonstrate a strong determination to contribute fully to the Northwestern community.

Thaddeus Ray Moulton Memorial Award
Thaddeus (Tad) Ray Moulton (Omega, ’84) was born in Houston, Texas on November 3, 1962. Tad took an interest in classes such as history, mathematics and economic but his main aspiration was to enter the field of law upon graduation. He helped to lead a successful rush effort in May 1981 and was elected to serve as Secretary/Historian for the chapter. He participated in many activities on campus, including Sigma Chi Derby Days and annual philanthropy events. On Friday, July 3,1981 Tad was tragically killed in an automobile accident in Esther, Louisiana. He was returning home for a summer vacation after working on an off-shore drilling rig in Louisiana. For those who came to know him, he will be remembered in the highest regards: an individual who offered a sense of enthusiasm and sincerity for Sigma Chi and for life. The Thaddeus Ray Moulton Memorial Award recognizes the member of the current year pledge classes whose spirit, character, ambition, and scholarship are seen as best exemplifying the commitment and spirit that Brother Moulton possessed as a new initiate.
